Deuteronomy 12
If there is ever a question of exactly
what the statutes and judgements are, this is the chapter to ponder.
In verse 7, God tells the People that they shall rejoice
in all that they put their hand unto. Verse 8 puts a value, or limit to
what God had said in verse 7 when He tells the People that they can't
just do any ol' thing they think is right in their own eyes. So far, the
People don't see things just as God would have them to, they see only
that which they see. Sometimes it is wickedness that they see because of
the condition of their heart at the time, and even overall. God clearly defines the boundaries of the Peoples
conduct, to walk after the statutes and judgments that He has taught
them by His own hand. The chapter goes on to list examples of the
statutes and judgments. It is important to know that this list is not
the entire law that the People had been taught, but merely a highlight,
or recap of those laws. There shall be peace and safety as they rest from their
journey. No adversity can cause them harm as long as God shields them
with His ever-present protection. God's hand will stay for as long as
the People will remain in His will, to do that which is pleasing to His
name. God has given them an expanded border, even before they settled in
their Land of Possession. He has given them authority to eat whatsoever
their soul longs for. God will not permit them to eat the blood of the
animal, because it is the life of the beast. Wherever some of the People are too far from the
appointed place of sacrifice, God has granted them an alternative. He
has made their way much easier in some ways, and He has come to expect
things of them that are not as easy as it was presumed to be. God has
required of them a Holiness that will be a good report throughout the
world. The People were instructed and warned that they shall
not seek after the customs of the heathen, to serve their gods, nor to
practice the rites and rituals of them who God has utterly cast out
because of their abominable lifestyle. Thou shall not do so unto the
LORD thy God: for every abomination to the LORD, which He hateth, have
they done unto their gods; for even their sons and their daughters they
have burnt in the fire to their gods.
