Deuteronomy 11
Moses continues from chapter 10 all of the requirements
and rewards that God has promised as a result of the Peoples' obedience
to His will. Moses goes on to remind the people of the curses, or
punishments for being disobedient. All of the nations that the People
are preparing to invade do know why the People are here, and what is
expected to become of them if Israel continues in the blessings of God.
After many attempts to attack and destroy the People of God, the heathen nations began to see a powerful God empowering the People to be victorious in defending themselves, in attacking the heathen nations so far, with the exception of the times that the People had displeased God and caused His wrath to be kindled upon them. The heathen nations had began to see the only weakness in the Holy Nations defence.
They knew that the People could not be defeated because
of the power of the One True God, but that is only when the People are
in accord with their God's will. The idea is to cause sin in the camp,
to make the People weak and to stand alone, without the strength of
God's mighty shield. The desires of the heart. That will surely cause
the People to crave sin. Give them the desires of their heart.
It don't even matter if the People do desire only that which God would hold acceptable for them, yet. When the People, or anyone gets what they want often enough, and for long enough that person will ALWAYS grow out of the desire to do God's will, because they forget that all the provisions are provided by God. They forget that He is the source of their very ability to produce and acquire gain of such magnitude.
If they go long enough without the appreciation and
acknowledgement that God is the sole provider of all that they have, God
will remind them. He will provide them with situations that do not
completely achieve their desires. This will either cause them to seek
Him, or it will cause them to rebel against Him. When they rebel, there
are consequences. When they seek Him, there are rewards. It's only a
matter of time before they will either be utterly destroyed, or they
will seek Him.
From our current perspective, it seems obvious what you or I would do. Why not just do it right from the beginning? No matter what, it will come back to this, anyway. Why not skip all the reprimand and reproach. Let's not provoke the Lord to anger, to cause weakness in our defence, to expose ourselves to the enemy. Instead, let's go on ahead and obey the will of God, and skip right to the reward.
Easy enough, huh? Maybe not. During these times of calamity, caused by their disobedience, they have great difficulty controlling their own will, because they are under the influence of the power of darkness, and they don't readily and currently realize it. God did warn them when they were listening, but they did not heed to His call. Now He has set in motion events that could and will destroy them if they do not repent. It will take a voice of the People to bring them to God's mercy seat now. God will listen then. He will bring us back to life, and that more abundantly.
