Commentary

by G. Neil Armstrong

Father, I receive Your Word in Jesus' name. I open my mind to You, oh God. I ask that You bless me, so that I may understand Your Word clearly enough to apply it to my life, and to share it with other people. Bless my mind, so that I may recall Your Word at any specific or random time, to share with people, and to apply it to a situation. Let Your Word live in me, and through me. I pray in Jesus' name, amen.

This chapter expresses the condition of law. As the chapter progresses, the focus is shifted to that outward and inward man. The world had developed a system during this time, that had discriminated from one race to another. Jews and Gentiles are spoken of in this chapter. There is a distinction between the Jews and the Gentiles. This chapter makes it clear that law, race, grace... its all a matter of the heart. What we are inwardly is ultimately what we are outwardly.

This makes most sense when you think about this fact... what a person feels or thinks about himself will attract people who feel and think about themselves. What this amounts to is this... if I think I'm a great guy, and if I feel like I'm a great guy, I will behave like a great guy. I will attract people who think, feel and act great.

This chapter wants us to understand that if you think, feel and act according to the law, which is the Word of God, then you will attract other people who are the same or similar, AND you will attract people who seek this for their own lives.

This is written in some other ways too. For example, the scripture says to "let your light so shine before men". This is to say that you think Jesus, feel Jesus, and behave like Jesus. As a result, it will draw all men to Jesus. Some will think, feel and behave similar, while some will be seeking this for themselves, but ALL men will be drawn in.

If this makes sense to you, and you would like to be one of the people who think, feel and behave like Jesus, please read carefully to the following prayer. After each sentence, think about what you have read. Below, there is a place where you can write your own prayer or thoughts, concerns, or anything the Lord prompts you to write.

Father, I want to think, feel and behave just like Jesus. I admit that He is real, and that I want to have Jesus in my life. I want to be led by the Spirit of God and to live in the cleansing blood of Jesus. I accept You as my Lord, Jesus. I ask that You forgive me of all my sins and give me a fresh start. I ask and pray in Jesus' name, amen.
