 2 Samuel 6

It should be understood here that the Ark of the Covenant is not, in itself, of any power except that the Lord empowers it. It is a symbol of the promise of the People, meant to be revered and respected, as is the requirement of the individual for the law of God, also referred to as the Law of Moses. The Ark should not, of itself, be worshiped as an idol would be for the heathen nations. It should also not be treated as an ordinary instrument, for certainly it is not an ordinary thing. It is a reminder to all of the People what God has done for them so far. His work is not completed, but a work in progress. As a natural thing, people tend to find reality more readily in things that they can see and name. God understood this human trait. He provided for them the Ark of the Covenant.

David was exalted above all the People, to be king of Israel. He acknowledged God in this thing, as often as applicable. He abated himself constantly, ever mindful that it is not something he had done or deserved, but something that God had mercifully blessed him with. He had great favor in the hearts of all the People. He had favor with God. He wasn't perfect, but he had a repentant heart. Unlike David, Michal was born into royalty. She knew only the life of being served and respected to the utmost. She didn't know much about humility. Though it is not a good thing, it is understandable that she would respond the way she did when David humbled himself in worship before the Lord, for all the world to see. The trouble is, she seen only with her eyes and not with her heart. She seen a reputation in jeopardy instead of favor with God. She didn't understand the Living God as did the People because she had her head all up in royalty, to assume the role of queen. She should have assumed the role of one of God's children.

In her jealousy and self-afflicted shame, she stubbornly bore no children unto David. This would have been a great honor for David, had she given him the precious gift of life... a child, a token of their love for each other and for God. Instead, she kept her nose in the air and continued to behave as if she were better than all that.

I sincerely hope we can see a parallel in our own lives with the events that have occurred throughout the ages. As Solomon had later written, there is nothing new under the sun. We can learn from others. We need only to be mindful of the details and relate, and with practical application, practice what we learn. God is the same today, as He was then, and will remain the same forever. We can expect the same awesome results as were in those days. Let's grasp the love, the commitment and the desire to serve him exactly. It's not a difficult thing. We need only commit with a sincere heart. We don't even have to worry about getting it right all the time. Let's put our best foot forward and walk solidly onward.
