 2 Samuel 5

It is interesting that David had taken to himself concubines and was still able to focus his full attention upon the Lord's will. It is no small matter to have women and children about all the time, while the enemy makes effort to destroy him. It seems to me that these women were able to understand the importance of David's position as king. I know that David is only the second king over Israel, and that it is still a new thing among the People. Sure, there were kings over the heathen nations all around them, and the People did have an awareness of how things were done in those nations. What interests me is that their first king was not an ideal experience for the People, yet they still seem to harmonize fairly well with the new king, David.

David had a true dedication to serve the Lord exactly as the Lord instructs him. In fact, David makes it a point to inquire of the Lord before doing anything about a situation that is amiss. Not only that, but David carries out the instruction of the Lord exactly as God commands. I know how common it is to modify the Lord's plan, to suit our agenda, thinking that the modified way will produce the same result. We tend to think that our modifications will make things easier. Saul thought so and he lost his thrown because of it. When we ask God to lead us, we need to pay particular attention to details because the Lord gives us His plan in detail and fully expects us to carry out that plan exactly as instructed. In time and in order in which He plans will bring forth the result that He intends for us to obtain. When we modify the plan, we modify the result. Often times an intended blessing can become a curse if we don't follow the exact plan. That's what happened with Saul.

The first time David inquired of the Lord, God's instruction was different than the second time. It was not enough that David simply engage the enemy, He needed to do it exactly the way God told him to do it. David could not know why, he simply needed to trust and obey. After all that David had been through, he knew that God's way was the only way. It would have been impossible for the shepherd boy, David to be where he is here if he had difficulty following God's will.

When we learn to follow God's will exactly according to His plan, He will raise us up to greatness. If we are faithful with the little things, He will make us ruler over many.
