Commentary
1 Kings 16
Gods Perfect Justice
It didn't take very long for Omri to forget about the wrath of God, and what would surely happen as a result. God is merciful and just. When He exercises His judgment upon man, it is certain that it is for a very serious reason. God will not permit any of His children to worship other gods. There will be no compromise.
Omri didn't forget what God had done. Omri had likely rationalized in his heart that what happened to Jeroboam was not by God's hand. Perhaps Omri
convinced himself that God is merely a superficial character... a "made up" story to keep people virtuous or moral. I think we do that very thing today. Sometimes we want to do something that we know is wrong, so we convince ourselves that God will forgive us, or we simply deny God and the reality of Him.
No matter how detached you become at some points in your life, you will do well to remember always that God will not tolerate idol worship. He will not be denied, nor will He share His glory. God will work with you, to help you live a glorious and prosperous life. He will be merciful to you and He will be patient with you. He will forgive your sin when you confess them and acknowledge Him. He will NOT permit anyone to have any other god instead of Him, or in addition to Him. There is no such thing as another god. The Great "I Am" is the only God that exists. All other gods are made by man, for man to serve instead of the One True God.
Be grateful for Jesus. It is by Jesus' blood, shed for our sins, that we can continue to walk, even after we have greatly erred. He is the spotless lamb, sacrificed as an atonement for our sins, for all time. We must accept this as truth, or be as Omri and Jeroboam. It is man's nature to seek after optimum survival. To attain this, we would do well to follow after the God that gave us life in the first place. Nobody or nothing else will ever do.
