Commentary
1 Kings 9
The House of God and the Kings House Finished
Now that the two buildings are complete, and there is peace all around, Solomon did not rest... at least, he did not lay down become lazy and careless. He went on to build a navy of ships and employed them with men who knew the seas. From the Israelites, Solomon chose men of war to do any fighting. He chose the other nations' men for bond servants and maid servants. The Lord makes a covenant with Solomon in this chapter. This covenant is still the same for us, today. God wants us to serve Him only, and to not serve other gods. Gods are idols. Gods are products of our imagination, probably so a person can focus on something that has no power or authority. All gods are false, lifeless, meaningless, and useless, except the One True God, the God of Israel, The Creator, the Great I Am. In Him only do we serve.
He will establish His name forever through us, His Holy Temples. Will those who pass by be in awe at the splendid and awesome temple you have built for God? Will they feel God's presence radiating from us? Will they inquire of God, because of what we have become for God? Are we all that we can be of Him? Is His name being spread abroad because of our true ambition to tell everyone of Hm? Can people see Him in us, even without the introductions?
Maybe we should spend time ridding ourselves of all the distractions, the material wealth we have acquired. It may be the abundance of wealth that we have accumulated, the very thing that distracts us from God's will. Don't allow the blessing to become a burden.
