Commentary
2 Samuel 18
If none go with me, still I will follow. When we walk after the way of the Lord, we will sometimes come to a place where we seem so all alone. Our loved ones may fall to our right or to our left, leaving us alone, to continue to do the will of the Lord. Maybe there is someone who is new to the faith, and all of your previous friends and loved ones are not of the faith, having not accepted the good news of Jesus, and believed. The Lord sets before us a path that leads only to victory. When we venture from that path, if we do not find our way back soon enough, peace can seem far from us, and victory will not be as certain as it is on the path. You have made this decision and you stand strongly now, to follow Him. Some of our very dearest and most loved may come against you at some point in your new walk. You will not have the heart to raise a standard against them, not even to protect yourself. David had no intention to see Absalom killed. It was his son, after all. David did not want harm to come to Saul or his family.
What I am saying is, nothing can stand against us when we are God's People. Sometimes it is our beloved family, the very ones we grew up with, who come against us. God will not allow anything to destroy us. His mercy will not depart from us, even if we stray away from the path. He will correct us. He will make things well. It is not always what we expect, either. We want only good to become of our families and friends, but some of them have chosen to not accept Jesus, and they are subject to the enemy and the misadventures that be. We can protect them, but it is not easy sometimes. There is a way to nurture them, to sow a seed in tears. We have to love them completely, unconditionally, as David had for his family and dearly beloved friends.
We don"t need to always know what's going on around us, or in God's plans. We need only to understand our relationship with Him, and be fully dedicated to His will. Our enemies will not prosper in any attempt to overcome us. Even if we had addiction, we are not in that addiction any longer. Maybe you are still using? Be certain that God's hand is moving you out of it. Be sure God's will is for you to know no bondage. Believe He is working, right this very minute, to develop in you a stronger desire to be free, than to be "high", or whatever. God's will is established in us, and nothing, no outside forces can come against it and prosper. It might look bad at times, but so does the kitchen when we try to bake a cake. God's cleaning it up. He's putting the sweet aroma in the air. With Him, you can have your cake, and eat it too.
