Commentary
2 Samuel 15
Absalom had a heart for conspiracy. He spent his entire life staging and scheming to overthrow his fathers kingdom. He wanted the power. Surely he did not have the People's best interest at heart. It was self-seeking. He wanted to be served. He wanted to abuse power. He could have nearly everything he wanted just for being in the royal family, but it was not enough. He wanted it all, no matter the cost. He is not appointed heir to the thrown, but did he know that? God told David that Solomon will be king of Israel, but did Absalom know this? I am of a mind to think Absalom wanted only to take the kingdom, even if he were heir. He wanted it now.
David, even during all of this, had the best interest of the People at heart. His decisions were not motivated by fear for himself, they were for the welfare of the People. David did know God's will for the kingdom, and Absalom was not to be king. David may have been a very wise king, but not everything can be taken into consideration. There are still things that are not known, that cannot be known. That is why it is so important to seek God before doing anything. If we can understand God's will, and follow His directions exactly, we will have His plan intact. David's heart was for the Lord, even though he had done some things deliberately wrong. He did not remain defeated. He was chastised and he was repentant.
We can learn a lot from David. We can learn to seek God's will in all that we do. He will chose us to do many mighty things if we can be trusted to remain in His will. We needn't fear our shortcomings. We need only to fear God. He will be our completion. He will sustain victory in our lives. He will manifest His perfect will in our imperfect lives, and in the countless lives that we influence, even at our current level! This is the way of the Lord. This is His desire for us, individually, and as whole; the human race.
