Commentary
2 Samuel 2
A lot of things had occurred in this chapter. My attention is drawn to the very beginning, even the very first couple of verses. There was war between the house of David and the house of Saul. David and Jonathan made a statute that this thing would not be so. David and Saul had made the exact same statute. After Saul had died, no such statute was honored. The house of Saul seemed to have little knowledge of this statute. A lot of things that Saul said to David seemed to have little meaning or sincerity. A lot of time passed during this war. Abner made peace between the house David and the house of Saul. Joab did not approve of this peace because Abner had slain Joab's siblings during recent battles. David stayed in Hebron and bore several children. He sought to restore unto himself the daughter of Saul, Michal, given to him for slaying 400 Philistines. Abner, as a peace offering did just that. Joab killed Abner in revenge for his losses. David proved himself innocent of this deed and the People loved him for it, as they loved everything David did.
It seems to me that if our heart is right toward God, we don't need to have a specific motive for every little thing that we do in life. Our actions will be a result of our love for God and when circumstances come about, we will be lead and motivated by that love, honorable living will prevail and we will do what is right, even when we don't quite know what to do. Our integrity will prove us and we will be found guiltless. David did not know that Joab would kill Abner. David did not support that action and he did not approve of it when he learned what had been done. He truly mourned the death of Abner and fasted. Some offered him to eat and he swore against it. The People took notice and were re-assured of David's integrity and loved him all the more.
What situations do we face that we were not prepared for? If we trust in the Lord with all of our heart, lean not to our own understanding, and in all of our ways acknowledge Him, He will direct our path. All things work together for the good for those who love Hm and are called according to His purpose.
