Commentary
by G. Neil Armstrong
1 Samuel 31
This is the time that which was spoken of by Samuel, the prophet when he told Saul that he will lose his kingdom, that the Lord would give the kingdom to another, a man after God's own heart. Even the woman with a familiar spirit told Saul that he will surely die. Saul did not want the credit for his death to belong to the Philistines, so he took his own life instead. Saul had made many mistakes, but perhaps this is the worse one so far. Surely the Philistines would have killed Saul, but Saul took his own life instead. He did not die an honorable death, fighting in battle.
We should remember that no matter what situations arise in our life, we should not take our own life in suicide. God gives and God takes away. No matter what seems clear to happen next, remember that it has not happened yet and that God can intervene to rescue us from the trouble. We have hope until such a time that we are dead. After that, there is no more that we or anyone else can do for us. God is merciful and just. Call on HIm with a true heart and He will rescue you.
