Joshua 9
In the days of Joshua, it might have seemed as a cowardly thing to deceive the dominant host to effect one's own safety, but in the whole of the thing, I believe it wise that these men came to be a part of the Chosen of God, even if only as slaves. Under any circumstances, it is better to be a slave for the Almighty God, than to fall by His wrath. These men knew of a certainty that they were doomed in their current station; as this land was appointed to Israel by the Creator of all that exists. God had already made clear that He is Almighty, and that none can withstand Him.
It would seem an honorable thing to fall in battle, fighting for a good cause. In a nation of warriors and skilled men of arms, it requires a certain kind of humility to turn away from their own homelands so that they can be saved alive and be at league with the winning team. In this case, however, it is clear that God is the victor, and that His statutes are fair and just, and that His power is boundless. None can withstand His wrath, and none would deny His blessings. Even the heathen would rather take the lowest rank in God's army than to be exalted above all men in a war that will not succeed.
We have no hope to defeat our enemies today, except that God would lead us with His undefeated power and might. A power greater than ourselves has bound us as slaves to the wiles of the enemy. I will require a power greater than ourselves to free us of the bondage. A power that is above all power beckons us to His will, so that we may obtain freedom. Freedom is not all that this Highest power does offer. He offers long life and prosperity. He offers eternal safety from all wickedness. He offers joy unspeakable, and full of glory. Whatever you seek, do it to find God's will for your life. All else will come. None will be left behind who ask for Him.
