Deuteronomy 31
What's in a song? Are all songs of a melody and tempo? Do all songs need music or harmonizing tones? What of the words in a song? What is a song? This chapter of Deuteronomy suggests that a song is much more than words or melodies or any harmonizing tones. A song is that which occupies your heart. There are a number of different ways for people to express their song. Some sing. Some move by the specific emotions that is associated with their hearts' songs. God has established a song in the hearts of each child that has sought and accepted the way of God. This song, with countless others comes from God and must be sang with the whole heart. The Law of God ought to be an expression of absolute delight. This song must be worn on your neck, upon your forehead, whatever it takes to keep conscience acknowledgment of its way.
I am a man, and as a man I have experienced my share of intimacy in relationships. This is a song. I express this song with compassion for that woman. How this song moves me is how I will express it. The Law of God should be esteemed as more intimate than even a perfect marriage or relationship. It should be expressed with confidence that this song will overcome all evil, even the evil in our own hearts. This song cannot me muted or unsung. If we don't praise Him, the rocks will cry out. His song will be sung. The world will know Him through you. The world will know Him through me. They will either know Him for His tender mercies, loving kindness, Great Deliverer, or even as the just and terrible God. How will God be known to the world through YOUR song?
Sing on, because the world is watching you. They are looking for a sign; any sign. Don't make occasion to be a song of wrath. Don't let the world know Him as a terrible God because of your stiff-neck. Let it be known throughout the world that God will do great and awesome things for His own, and that all should come to be one of His.
Moses has passed the leadership to Joshua. Moses reminds the people about some more of the laws that they must live by as a Holy Nation unto God. The details can be broken down, going in any direction. I suggest that a new comer should begin to understand the way of God by reading the Bible, beginning with Genesis. Save all of your questions until you come to the end of each book. At the end of each chapter, you should write in your own words what is being taught in that chapter. This journey will take you to a deeper understanding of God and will gradually develop in you a genuine desire to be one of His own, to accept and follow His will.
I want to encourage you to continue always forward, no matter how sinful you appear to be in your own eyes. It is not your task to clean up your own life. Your task is to learn the way of God and let it change your mind, your way of thinking and behaving. It will even change your emotions and outlook on life. It will not happen all at once. You will feel super clean immediately upon receiving God in your life. For most people, this is the single most delightful experience in all of their lives. Some people do not feel any different right away. Remember that it is not about how you feel or experience, it is about a genuine desire to know God and to follow His way.
