It is interesting to me to see how the first two verses were structured in their sentences. Notice that God's work of creation was finished (verse 1) and in verse 2 He ended this work. Verse two also says that God rested. Does this mean that God was tired and needed a break? That isn't what is said here. The first verse told us twice that He was finished and that it was ended. The second verse made it even more dynamic by telling us that it was only a rest, or pause. I contemplate that often in my walk, and I am resolved to believe God wanted this to develop, to become its intended "growth", as a result of His actual creation. God does not become tired, needing a break. He merely wants what He created to grow and become sufficient by means of its own given life.
Verse three is a model of what we need to do after our own handy-work, in which he skilled within us to bring into existence. There is a real need for us to take pause, and allow our work to flourish of its own, to follow the pattern of life. We need to give some time to see what we created, and how it will develop and what result it will bring. This is where we can clearly define if what we had done is good or evil. If we are to honor the sabbath, to keep it separate, Holy for the Lord, we need to give it time to grow, just as God has given us time to grow.
After God created everything, paused to allow it to develop, He seen that man needed just a bit more of a "touch" so that the work can be completed and efficient. This is when He took a rib from Adam and created Eve, from the already created man. It is interesting to notice here that before sin was committed, there was no "shame". It is always the case that when we know the difference between right and wrong, then choose to do wrong, then we see it, we feel the shame. What a glorious day it will be when we can see the wrong even before we do the wrong, to willingly separate our selves from the sin, in the first place... even without having to learn from a mistake we can perhaps prevent altogether. We don't always have to understand why. Obedience to God will always protect us from unnecessary suffering, as a result of sin.
