Commentary

by G. Neil Armstrong

More blessed are those who have not seen and do still believe. You have heard it said, "seeing is believing". This is not true. Many times we believe what another person told us, even if there is not a shred of evidence to sustain what was said. What about those things we actually did see? Many times we deny what we have seen clearly and witnessed. Sometimes it is easier to deny the truth than it is to admit we were not living in the truth all along.

At some point each of us come to a place where we must face the facts. We have sinned and have fallen short. No more denial. No more excuses. Shame tries to overwhelm us and we shrink in it. Verse 9 assures us that if we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive our sins. That's not all God will do. The verse goes on to say He will also cleanse us from all unrighteousness! Unrighteousness is where we used to hide! That's where we store up all the sin we denied ever exsisted. This unrighteousness is the shame land where we cast all the willful and unwillfull sin in our lives. God said He will clean all of that up for us. We can be clean on the inside! All the weight of all that sin suddenly all gone! Surely we feel like we can float away. What a burden lifted!

Thank You, Jesus for the power of Your blood. Thank You for the depth of Your love for us. Thank You for forgiving my sin and cleaning me up so there is no unrighteousness hidden anywhere. With You, all things are possible. I can equal and exceed every task before me. I can be a living, tangible example of Your love and Your power. Thank You for believing in me even when I was not believing in You. I pray in Jesus' name, amen.
