Commentary
1 Kings 12
Counsel of the Ungodly
As children, nearly all of us have manipulated authority in the same manner as we see in this chapter. Many of us still do. We seek the counsel, or advise of someone and if we don't like what we hear, we go to another and seek other counsel, or advice, until we hear what pleases us most. This will always result in unsavory results. God did rend the kingdom from Solomon and it is His word that set this thing in motion.
There is such a time when people do tire of the way of ungodliness. When we reach a depth that offers only constant despair, we want to seek God for deliverance. In the mercy of God, we find that He will "repent" His hand from our demise and deliver us from our calamity. We can prevent this whole thing by simply doing Gods will at the beginning. Most of the time, we don't see it in whole, and we are only vaguely aware of our own "self-destruct" behavior because we "want what we want, and we want it now" no matter how damaging it is to us. We have a tendacy of seeking pleasure that is unhealthy and brings us far from God's will for us. He wants us to have abundant life. He wants to give us the best of everything, but we think we know best.
We can find the answers we seek if we seek diligently. Do we seek answers that bring us closer to God, or do we seek answers that bring us closer to self satisfaction? Ponder this question, and answer it honestly. You owe it to yourself, so "to thine own self be true". If you want to reach great heights in your life, seek God's guidance and follow His instruction. Don't permit yourself to venture away from this way. If you do find yourself in the midst of self-gratification, stop and listen. God has been talking to you. He wants to help you reach the very best He has for you. It's not too late when you make a mess of things. Ask the Lord, and He will restore you.
