Commentary
1 Kings 1
How many times have we found ourselves in a position that the Lord has not called us to? Each of us have a purpose for the Lord, in His kingdom. It seems the most difficult thing for some of us to identify our purpose, that we should serve the Lord, God. We want to do something, so we do what is in our heart to do. Something is amiss. It all may seem to be well and good, but something is amiss. Even if we are qualified and well able to do a thing for the Lord, it is not always what God has called us to do. Sometimes God calls us to do something that seems very far from what we are good at, and are skilled to do. God does not call the qualified, He qualifies the called.
At no time should we lean to our own understanding, thinking to do good for the Kingdom of God, using our skills to serve Him. We need to seek God, to do what He calls us to do, even if it's not something we are prepared for, or have any experience in. Even if someone else is called to do something, and that person seems far less apt to accomplish, or less skilled or experienced to do, we should never go forth by our own accord.
It is not always clear what the Lord wants us to do. It is not always the likely thing that He desires of us. God's ways are not our ways, nor His thoughts our thoughts. Let His kingdom come and His will be done.
In David's family, there seems to be a common misconception of who should assume what role. Is it an identity crisis, or a lust for power? Is it the misleading of the enemy? Where does this confusion originate? How is a matter such as this settled? David is the presiding ruler, for he is yet alive. God gave David specific instruction to appoint Solomon as heir to the thrown. It seems that only David and a few others knew of this, because many have acted in their own accord, even while David yet lives, to make Adonijah king of Israel.
This has happened before in David's household. This has happened before in our lifetime. This still happens. We assume a role that we have not been called to serve. Sometimes we even know better. In any case, we need to allow God to lead us. If we are mistaken, we don't need to fear because the Lord will correct us. He will honor our zeal, but He will lead us on the correct path. Don't be discouraged if the wrong step is taken. Sometimes it is better to make a mistake than to do nothing at all. Those who love us will lead us in love. Always look to serve God, even if you still aren't sure what God will have you to do. God will even make our mistakes to prosper.
It is a matter of the heart... the condition of the heart. Do you mean for evil, or do you mean for good? God knows. Keep your heart pure before the Lord. He seeks the heart that is pure. He can use a pure heart, a heart for His will. Is this You?
