Commentary
2 Samuel 12
As we learned in this chapter, it is not wise to deliberately transgress against the Lord, especially when He has given so much to make thy name great. Sometimes when a celebrity is very famous, the law is more strict toward that celebrity because there are so many people who look up to them as a role model. Sometimes the consequence is far more severe when our name is greatly known. This is because we have become, "ruler over many". This is because God's name is strong with His anointed ones. Many are called, but few are chosen. David was chosen. God made David's name great throughout the whole world. God's hand was on David in all things, and what David had done did made occasion for the world to blaspheme against God. God will not be mocked. God is just as well as He is merciful. As promised, God did not take away His hand of mercy from David. Instead, He put forth His hand of justice onto David. He declared that David will always have battles to defend the kingdom. God took David's child. This grieved David deeply.
David understood the gravity of what he had done. He knew this thing ought not to be. He knew the judgment was set. He knew he must endure the reprimand, and to respect and honor God all the more. After all was done, his child gone now, he had another son by Bathsheba. This one will grow in the way of the Lord, to do His will, to carry on in David's stead.
We can carry on, to complete the remainder of our lives in union with God, even after doing a great wrong. We are not condemned. God will never leave nor forsake us. It is better that we don't sin than to recompense when we do. God's justice is difficult to endure, and we can grow wise and strong even without deliberately sinning. We love God. We love the way He interacts in our lives, to show us He is near. We want to be examples of Him, to show the world He is great and mighty. We want others to come unto the Lord, to follow after His way. We don't want to shame Him or ourselves. This is a most base thing... don't partake of that which is forbidden. Don't allow it to entice you. Seek God. Tear yourself away from the tempter and exalt His name for all to see.
