Commentary
2 Samuel 9
"Blessed to be a blessing". This is a quote that my pastor had taught me, and is certainly true in this chapter. David is established now, in his high calling, to be king of Israel. David remembered his promise to Jonathan, that he would show kindness to all of Jonathan's seed forever. Mephibosheth was obviously unaware of this promise and was likely surprised when the great and mighty king, David gave him a seat at his own table, and gave him servants to look after his own tasks. Because of what David had done this day, Mephibosheth went from a servant to a royal member of the house of David. This is no small thing. This will certainly change the course of history forever.
There is only one mention of Micha, Mephibosheth's son, but it is written that he dwelt in the house of David continually. I remember times in my own life when I was blessed and wanted to remember those who blessed me, to return the favor shown me. I have a personal understanding of how this works, and should work. I also know that if we are faithful to do this, as we are blessed, we are being faithful with these things, and God will increase us yet even more, to be ruler over much. We can make a difference, even from the very first act of obedience and faithfulness.
It is also important to understand that we cannot always act upon a surge of zealous impulse. It's perfectly natural to get all excited about what God is doing in our lives. It is okay to go out and voice abroad His mighty hand of provision. We don't deserve it, yet He bestows it upon us as though we were deserving. Caution should be exercised here. Don't give away everything pertaining to that blessing or provision. It is our cup overflowing, and in most cases, will continue to overflow if we are faithful to bless others with it. It's not a good practice to give away what you like least, and keep only the best for yourself. All that you have should be esteemed equally. To give of your overflow should not be bias to what you favor or what you like least. When you give to someone, you do also unto God. Don't save the best for yourself, deliberately. Don't go hungry after the Lord has blessed you.
This chapter shows that David remembered a promise made to a very dear friend, Jonathan. David will go on to show similar and other kindness and the People will all be blessed because of it. If David gave all that he had, to show kindness, or to fulfill a promise, or even just to bless others in general, he would have given away the source that will bless all of the people. This should be handled with wisdom. Even if we have over-abundance to be able to give to every man in need throughout the entire earth, it's not always God's will to give it, just like that. No matter what, let God lead you in your way. Trust Him and acknowledge Him. Don't lean to your own understanding. Be faithful over the little things and He will make you ruler over many.
