How to Overcome
By G Neil Armstrong
- Change thinking processes
- Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God
- Prayer
- Put good things in my mind
- One chapter of a good book, in addition to the daily reading of the Bible
- We need each other to help us overcome
- Mentally list what I am thankful for, or speak it audibly (children and family, church, leadership, etc.)
- Develop new habits
- Surround yourself with people who have a right mindset
- Receive counsel with Godly people
- Once in a while I have to just cry
- There is a time when I must stand
- As a man thinks, so is he
- Through Christ, any problem can be overcome:
How can we look so miserable when we come to church week after week? Why are our lives so NOT changed?
Judges
And Gideon said unto him, Oh my Lord, if the LORD be with us, why then is all this befallen us? and where [be] all his miracles which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt? but now the LORD hath forsaken us, and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites.

- I met a lot of good people all over the land, in a lot of different churches. How many of those good people are Spiritual? We come to church out of commitment, or habit. We cook, take care of the house and family, we work everyday to provide for our family and loved ones. We need an intimacy with God. We begin to fall in love with God again. We just pray with emotion. Only strong relationships will survive.
- I am driving to work one morning and I am all of a sudden determined to overcome something. I mean I am just gonna cut through the thorny front yard and I am gonna just get where I am going.
- I am going to go before the church for prayer. I am going to make a commitment to overcome. If I fail tomorrow I will get up and make my commitment again. If I come short of it in two or three days, or even close to the victory, I will get back up and make this commitment again.
Help me God, to overcome. I know that when I am tempted, you always provide a way for me to escape. I pray for that way to be made straight for me now. I pray for my life of revolt and disobedience. I must learn to submit. Broken and contrite heart can only be if I submit. I must not overwhelm myself with an obsession to be in control. It is not ordained of me as to which things I ought to do and when. I must consult with You to do unto Your will. Even if I had done this thing many times and know just how it ought to be carried out, I must not be presumptuous. I must consult You for guidance. Shall I go up to smite the Philistines? Sometimes the answer is yes, sometimes no. Each time, You have included detailed instructions for Your will to be carried out. The same is true today. I must ALWAYS consult you. I must submit. I pray in Jesus’ Name, amen.
